Common ECU Faults & Symptoms

Modern vehicles rely on the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to manage critical systems such as fuel delivery, ignition timing, and immobiliser functions.

When an ECU develops a fault, it can cause a wide range of issues — from minor performance problems to complete non-start conditions.

Below are some of the most common ECU faults we see:

A faulty ECU can prevent the engine from starting due to immobiliser or fuel system issues. This is often mistaken for battery or starter problems.

If diagnostic tools cannot connect to the ECU, it may indicate internal failure, power issues, or water damage.

Persistent warning lights, multiple fault codes, or codes that won’t clear can often point to ECU-related issues.

You may experience loss of power, rough idle, or hesitation due to incorrect fuel or ignition control.

Communication issues between the ECU and immobiliser can prevent the vehicle from starting or recognising the key.

Many ECUs are placed in exposed areas, making them vulnerable to water ingress, heat, and vibration over time.
